How to Have Great Hair All Winter Long

Winter Hair Essentials

Although I do love that the winter months provide a good excuse to embrace all things cozy (think hot tea, fuzzy slippers and cuddly blankets), the frigid temperatures and dry air can definitely wreak havoc with any attempts to have a good hair day. I’ve rounded up some of my favorite products that do wonders for combating dull, dry hair, frizzy split-ends, and those darn flyaways that most of us struggle with this time of the year.

One:  Joico K-Pak Protective Hairspray is designed to be used while styling hair to provide protection against thermal damage, and it’s a real lifesaver when it comes to helping my hair defend itself against my heat tool addiction. After my hair is dry, I clip it into three sections and lightly spray each section before straightening or curling it. Not only does it protect against heat, it also helps lock in the style and adds shininess to my otherwise lackluster winter hair. It can also be used as a finishing spray.

Two:  The T3 Featherweight Luxe 2i Dryer is an honest to goodness game changer when it comes to drying my hair quickly without the dreaded feeling that I am frying my hair. Even on the hottest and highest speed settings, my hair doesn’t suffer. There is a lot of science behind this hair dryer – Tourmaline and SoftAire technologies and an Ion Generator that all work together to reduce damage, static, and frizziness while adding shine. Definitely the most money I’ve ever spent on a hair dryer, but I’ve been using the Featherweight for four years now and it hasn’t let me down (unlike some less expensive ones I’ve had that got tossed in the trash when the motor burned out or – yikes – sparks started shooting out).

Three:  Kenra Professional Platinum Blow-Dry Spray helps speed up blow-drying time while also adding shine and protecting hair from heat damage. I keep my freshly washed hair wrapped up in a towel (this one is awesome) while I’m doing my makeup and then comb this spray through before reaching for my dryer. It’s one of those products where I always make sure to have an extra on hand because I really notice the difference if I run out.

Four:  Pureology Colour Fanatic Instant Deep Conditioning Mask has a place of honor in my shower due not only to the effects of winter, but also all of the extra stress I put on my hair by getting it highlighted or colored every few months. Once a week I swap out my regular conditioner and let my hair soak up all of the goodness that this deep conditioning mask has to offer.

Five:  Kenra Professional Volume Spray 25 is the icing on the cake for me after all of the work is done creating a hairstyle that I’m hoping will last the day. It’s the kind of hairspray that is lightweight enough to avoid an unfortunate case of helmet head, but strong enough to lock in your style and keep flyways at bay.

Six:  Alterna Bamboo Smooth Anti-Breakage Thermal Protectant Spray gets used before blow-drying my hair right along with the Kenra Blow-Dry Spray. Together they create the dynamic duo of heat protection. As an added bonus, the Alterna also helps repair and strengthen any dry and damaged ends that my hair may suffer between trims.

Seven:  Pureology Smooth Perfection Shampoo and Conditioner are both must haves around here, especially in the winter months when static and frizziness become real issues for me. Made especially for color-treated hair (no nasty sulfates that can strip away color or cause it to fade), the Smooth Perfection Shampoo is one of the only sulfate-free shampoos that I’ve tried that still lathers up really well during washing. The Smooth Perfection Conditioner is my everyday choice when I’m not using the deep conditioning mask – it’s a nice lightweight conditioner that sets the rest of my hair routine up for success.
